Call for Training Applications – Fueling Digital Activism in Africa (Scholarships Available)

As part of our Fueling Digital Activism project in Africa, African Queer Youth Initiative and All-Out are pleased to announce a call for applications for a training targeting LGBT+ youth in East Africa. This project will contribute to fueling effective, creative, non-violent youth activism for LGBT+ rights in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. 
It will bring 24 young activists, aged 18-30, from the above-mentioned countries together in Kenya to engage in participatory training and create an effective network of empowered change makers across the region. 

It will also give participants a better understanding of advocating for sexual health and LGBT+ rights, and the opportunity to launch and run their digital campaigns through a state-of-the-art online activism platform.

Eligibility

Are you 18 – 30 years old and from one of the above target countries? 

Are you passionate about the rights and well-being of LGBT+ youth in the region? 

Are you able to commit to full and active participation in our upcoming training scheduled to take place October 21 – 25, 2019, in Nairobi Kenya?

African Queer Youth Initiative. Job Vacancies: Program Manager and Membership & Communication Associate.

 Job Title: Program Manager

Supervisor: Coordinator

Location: Nigeria (Abuja or Lagos)

Position: Full Time (one-year contract with opportunity for extension)

This is an exciting time at the African Queer Youth Initiative especially for our members. We are growing and reaching out to a diverse group of LGBTIQ youth to partner with and to support the work that they do on the ground and to execute bold plans for the years ahead. We are looking for enthusiasm and interest in working with a diverse and audacious group of young people in an innovative team structure. We are seeking a dynamic person to fill the position of Program Officer. The selected candidate will oversee the design, implementation, monitoring and documentation of AQYI programs. They will serve as liaison between AQYI and external partners.

Who we are:

African Queer Youth Initiative is the first ever regional LGBTIQ youth development and leadership organization in the African continent. AQYI was founded to fill the gap of youth representation and involvement within the larger LGBTI movement, and for proper representation/involvement in discussions on issues that affect our lives. Our network is made up of youth activists who are mobilizing, supporting and amplifying the voices of LGBTIQ activists, building visibility and strategic networks in support of LGBTIQ youth in Africa. Our team is made up of 22 dedicated members from different countries in Africa, and our membership includes; young activists, writers, program managers, researchers, students, and young professionals in diverse fields within the African continent.

What does this job entail?

As the Program Manager for the African Queer Youth Initiative, you will:

  • Manage the programs and projects within AQYI.
  • Design and implement new programs in support of LGBTIQ youths in Africa.
  • Manage project and program budgeting and monitoring process.
  • Work closely with team members on fund proposal development, overall fund raising and other organizational development activities.
  • Building and sustaining relationships within the LGBTIQ movement and with external stakeholders.
  • Work with the communication associate to develop online contents, produce reports, blogs and the AQYI newsletter.
  • Coordinate consultants, junior staffs, interns and volunteers.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Who we are looking for:

  • You have strong interest in human rights and LGBTIQ issues in Africa.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma in a relevant field or equivalent experience with at least 3 years of engagement and experience with the LGBTIQ community.
  • You have experience designing and implementing programs and managing teams.
  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills in English; proficiency in French is not mandatory but desirable.
  • You have strong experience with MS office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • You have experience with public speaking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • You can work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks.
  • You can multitask and prioritize projects with competing deadlines.
  • You have good experience with fund raising and grant proposal development.
  • You are self-motivated and can work well independently with little or no supervision as well as function as a member of a team.
  • You can travel both locally and internationally when needed

We are seeking a dynamic person to fill the position of Membership and Communication Associate. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting membership recruitment and meeting member’s needs, handling our online communication (Facebook, twitter, Instagram, newsletters, YouTube, etc.) and providing overall administrative support.

What does this job entail?

As the Membership and Communication Associate for the African Queer Youth Initiative, you will:

  • Handle AQYI’s communication needs.
  • Be responsible for managing our social media presence and developing our newsletters.
  • Develop contents for our social media platforms and manage our website.
  • Be responsible for researching major happenings on LGBTIQ issues in Africa and developing concise statements on behalf of the AQYI.
  • Be responsible for proof-reading, editing and formatting AQYI communication materials and reports.
  • Provide support to AQYI members and specifically to the Membership and Communication Task Force.
  • Handle requests to join the AQYI membership and communicate with young people interested in our work.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Who we are looking for:

  • You have strong interest in human rights, youth and LGBTIQ issues in Africa.
  • You have a secondary school education or equivalent experience with at least 3 years of engagement and experience with the LGBTIQ community.
  • You have excellent oral and written communication skills in English; proficiency in French is not mandatory but desirable.
  • You are social media savvy and can communicate effectively with youth language.
  • You have strong experience with MS office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), YouTube, Facebook, ZOOM, Jitsi, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, Survey Monkey, Doodle Poll, and Mailchimp.
  • You have knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or other graphic editing tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds.
  • You have excellent attention to details.
  • You can work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks.
  • You can multitask and prioritize projects with competing deadlines.
  • You are self-motivated and can work well independently with little or no supervision as well as function as a member of a team.
  • You can travel both locally and internationally when needed.
