Inemesit Isang (they/them) Nigeria, Non-binary, Queer

How has the Zimuzo mentorship program impacted you as a queer person?

The mentorship program has transformed my life as a queer person. It has equipped me with invaluable skills and knowledge, breaking the limitations society imposed on me. I’ve learned to connect with people, provide exceptional service, and build a brand that encompasses fashion designing, styling, and pattern drafting. This experience has given me the confidence to break boundaries and pursue my dreams fearlessly. I’m grateful for the opportunities it has opened up and excited to continue making a positive impact.

What key skills or knowledge have you gained from the mentorship program, and how have you applied them in your life as a queer person?

Can you describe a particular moment or experience in the mentorship program that stood out to you?

A standout moment in the mentorship program was the in-person meeting between Mentees, mentors, and AQYI. It filled me with confidence and determination, reminding me that I’m not alone on this journey. The support and solidarity within the community inspired me to work even harder towards my success.

How has your relationship with your mentor evolved throughout the program, and what have you learned from them?

My mentorship journey has been transformative. With my mentor’s guidance, I’ve expanded my knowledge in fashion styling and branding. As a queer person, their support has empowered me to express myself authentically. Through their wisdom, I’ve learned life lessons and gained a deeper understanding of advocacy for inclusivity. This mentorship has not only enhanced my professional skills but also shaped my personal growth. I’m excited to continue this journey and make a positive impact in the LGBTQI+ community.

Finally, how do you plan to use the skills and knowledge you’ve gained from the Zimuzo mentorship program to create positive change for LGBTQI+ people in your community or country?

Finally, I hope to extend my knowledge, skill and experience to other LGBTQI+ persons living in the rural communities in the southern region of Nigeria through a project called “UTHANDO NI UPENDO”. It will cater to the economic and personal development of young queer persons living in rural communities, so they can also have this knowledge and experience.
