Deesire (Dark Deesire) – Transgender Woman, Gay, She/Her, Zambia

How do you celebrate PRIDE, and what does it mean to embrace the LGBTQI+ community?

I celebrate pride by always living my truth. I’m from a country that constantly dehumanises, demonises, stigmatises, discriminates, criminalises and humiliates LGBTQ+ persons, and yet despite all these odds, I’ve stood my ground, held strong and achieved so much. In living my truth, I’ve chosen my happiness over my safety. I’m constantly harassed and mocked, and I’ve been assaulted. I’ve endured all these hardships and survived. Embracing the LGBTQI+ community means embracing diversity, equality, love and humanity.

For someone who isn’t out yet, what advice would you give them for them to be their authentic self?

Don’t be pressured to step out. The journey starts from within; study and grow, learn more about yourself and your community, and soon you will evolve. Your fears are valid; your concerns, worries, and inner turmoil are all part of the process. The journey to self-discovery is different from person to person, but once you open your eyes, mind and soul to all around you, you will see the beauty in life. Take your time; soon, you will get there.

What is an issue the LGBTQI+ community is facing that many people might not know about?

I refuse to accept that heterosexual society is unaware of our problems. They actively and willingly choose to close their minds, eyes, ears and hearts to our pleas. We cry out constantly for our rights as humans to be recognised, yet they turn us away. People fear that which they don’t know, us whom they choose not to know and with their rage, unprovoked, they attack, hurt, and kill. Our biggest issue is that society refuses to acknowledge that we are human, too, capable of love, pain, growth, success, and all that life has to offer.

How can allies make an impact this month to support the LGBTQI+ community?

There is only one cure for homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and queerphobia and that’s education. Our allies can educate their fellows, help share struggles and lived experiences, help connect us to opportunities that will lead to our growth and help create meaningful and positive partnerships.

What is your message to African queer youth this Pride Month?

Dear African Queer Youth, they may say you’re unworthy, undeserving, unwanted and inhuman, but they are wrong. Live your truth, be you, break the silence and take up space. Whenever they say “you can”, prove them wrong; whenever you say “you won’t”, show them that you will always find a way. You are loved and wanted; your existence, life matter, and presence in this world are needed. You may not see the bigger picture, but it will all make sense soon. Stay strong, stay true and stay proud. As they spread hate… share the spirit of Ubuntu.

We Are Born Human Above All Else.
